55. Out of Africa: Meryl Streep is quite possibly the greatest actress of all time, and Robert Redford is nothing short of an icon. The two give AMAZING performances in Out of Africa and the movie is beautifully shot, but it has an abysmal pace and the running time is too long. Period pieces love to milk every detail they set up, and it gets milked bone dry before the first half ends. It's not a film that holds up well.

54. Braveheart: Still can't get through the whole movie. 3 hours of cookie-cutter melodramatic horseshit that isn't even campy enough to be entertaining. Watching people chew scenery is generally entertaining but there's something about seeing Mel Gibson do it that's just unwatchable. There's also the fact that Babe was robbed; now that's a truly provocative movie right there

This dislike for Forrest Gump, my God. That movies realllllllllllllly good - granted, not as good as Shawshank (granted I'm a Stephen King nerd) or Pulp Fiction (not sure why you think my generation doesn't like it) but still a respectable movie on its own. Calling it the worst feels off base to me.

53. Shakespeare In Love - This piece of tripe won over Saving Private Ryan. Nuff said.

52. Gladiator: Similar to Braveheart, but better. That's pretty much it.

51. The King's Speech - I don't really have much to say about this one; I totally get why it won (and I hate the term "oscar bait" but...yeah). By all accounts a good movie, but there's nothing about it that really held my interest or made me think to myself "hell yeah this totally deserves to be immortalized in the pantheon of Best Picture winners for the rest of eternity." I actually think this was a fairly weak year so I'm not even too bothered by it winning nor can I really offer a realistic alternative but I guess I'd be much happier if Black Swan or The Kids Are All Right took this one instead.

Also Lex can I get a reasoning for the Annie Hall idol? I'm not that salty (maybe just a little) but I would like to hear your rationale only because I don't hear people's opinions on that movie very often

I'm not that salty (maybe just a little) but I would like to hear your rationale only because I don't hear people's opinions on that movie very often Annie Hall is one of Woody Allen's masterpieces. He's one of the most important filmmakers of the past 50 years. And I think personally there are at least 20 films worse than Annie Hall on the list.

They took a caustic satire (seriously, read the book) and turned it into a feel good family film. It's insulting to me.

Which, y'know, I get is the point - but still. Fun is fun.

49. The Hurt Locker: Cliche plot, good acting, solid film. It wasn't even the strongest movie of the year.

48. Dances with wolves
If we're cutting crash, this one needs to go too. Heavy-handed as fuck and completely lacking in any subtlety
