47. The Artist - Look, I know 2011 was a really weak year for movies. I mean, friggin MONEYBALL got nominated for Best Picture. So it's not like I can say The Artist beat out some other more deserving movie. But this is really a gimmick movie that benefits from nostalgia. If it had dialogue it wouldn't be on anyone's radar.

46. West Side Story. Romeo and Juliet but in New York in the 50's set to music. Good musical, and a very fun film, but it's a lot weaker than most on the list.

45. Chicago - Two musicals in a row! Okay, I'm starting to get to movies that I actually enjoy. This movie is so much fun but I'm still unsure of how it won Best Picture when I seriously believe every single movie nominated that year was better than this one. Anyway, this is a great musical adaptation that really feels like it ushered in a whole bunch of good musical adaptations over the next ten years so it deserves some credit for that. But this feels like the best cut at this point in the ranking.

44. An American In Paris - A lovely movie, with some classic songs like I Got Rhythm and Our Love Is Here To Stay. But it had no business beating A Streetcar Named Desire.

43. All Quiet on the Western Front. All Quiet is the Richard Hatch of cinema. It was a massive step forward, and the now-cliche war plot of "rookie solider mentored by tough, grizzled, veteran" is a classic. All Quiet also does a great job of portraying war, making it accurate and horrifying. However, it just doesn't hold up. Every on-screen and off-screen process with the film is just so outdated, and it just doesn't age well enough to beat the other films here.

42. Chariots of Fire - This is a great movie. Also agreed with Donovan's below post--this might be one of the best and most iconic movie themes of all time. It's kind of comical at this point but I'm trying to put myself in a 1981 mindset and I have to imagine it was groundbreaking at the time. I don't know what my criticisms would be aside from the fact that I like all the other movies left more than this one. This one does feel a little heavy-handed at times and doesn't really hold up well

41. Ordinary People - This template for every future Lifetime movie somehow beat what many consider the greatest film of the 80s, Raging Bull.

40. Rocky: A really fun movie, Rocky made people think Slyvester Stalone was a good actor and he wasn't just playing a character. A great soundtrack and some memorable lines and scenes, it'll be forever remembered as one of the best sports movies of all time and what spawned a mediocre franchise that was milked bone dry. How many Rockys did their end up being? 6? However, Rocky doesn't bring the same power or technical awe that other films here have. (It's also not Raging Bull)

39. A Beautiful Mind - I'm gonna have to cut this one as much as I don't want to. Great movie but I think it's 100% carried by Russell Crowe's performance (who probably should have won Best Actor for this tbh but presumably didn't because he had just won it the year before for Gladiator). I think this one is an easy sell for a Best Picture so I'm cutting it very arbitrarily because all the other movies left feel a bit more innovative/imaginative to me

38. Gladiator - The trailer for this movie used for music "Bawitdaba". 9 months later it wins Best Picture. Explain that.

38. Ben-Hur: Gladiator but older. I think it also helped get animal rights on sets due to horse deaths, but don't quote me on that.
