31. Kramer vs. Kramer - a slightly better Lifetime Movie of the Week than Ordinary People, so it gets a higher rank.

30. Mutiny on the Bounty: Pretty much the same as All Quiet. Doesn't hold up well and only old guys and film students like it.

31. Kramer vs. Kramer - a slightly better Lifetime Movie of the Week than Ordinary People, so it gets a higher rank. THIS is the one I've been saving my idol for. Kramer vs. Kramer is my absolute favorite Best Picture winner and in my opinion is also the most underrated one. I kind of take issue with you calling it a Lifetime Movie because I actually like the fact that the Academy gave the award to a movie that generally feels...I don't know what the right word is, maybe low-stakes? Like...look at the list of Best Pictures, it mostly consists of epics, period pieces, self-important Oscar bait, war films, etc etc etc. Kramer vs. Kramer feels like an actual honest story that I think was pretty revolutionary for the time in terms of exploring gender dynamics in the family unit. I also think Meryl Streep gives her absolute best performance of her entire career here, which is saying a lot. Joanna Kramer might just be one of my personal favorite characters in cinema; it's easy to see her as a villain (and she probably is one, in a very unconventional way) but there's something about her complex story that is so fascinating. Dustin Hoffman is also great here, as usual. I have no complaints about this movie at all except maybe that it's REALLY tough to watch if you don't know how it ends...like, very emotionally taxing. But I don't see why this movie should be punished for being Lifetime-esque when it has razor-tight dialogue and acting and a really compelling plot. So yeah, I'm idoling this one. This movie probably isn't even in my top 10 all-time favorite movies but it's easily my favorite Best Picture.

30. The Departed - Okay this movie is really good but I feel like this was a coronation for Scorsese more than anything. The fact that the guy never won Best Director or that none of his movies ever won Best Picture before this one is kind of a travesty but I don't know that The Departed is an accurate reflection of his work, since it feels like one of his weakest movies. I think it kind of just worked out for him that this was a fairly weak year for Best Picture/Director, even though I still contend that Babel was robbed.

29. Argo: Argo is a good film, but not a great film. It's dramatic when it needs to be, can deliver laughs, has great suspense, and a few really fun characters. It's a versatile film that can balance critic love and fan reception, and stands as an outlier mostly due it being one of the only Oscar winners that's both entertaining for the general masses and critically acclaimed. It's win also was the topic of some debate, due to it beating David O. Russell Presents: Jennifer Lawrence Is Crazy Part 1 and Lincoln. I'm just happy Les Mis didn't win, which is probably the reason I lovr Argo the most. Solid film, but nothing spectacular.

27. Platoon - I'm sorry, I have to start cutting war films at this point. It's really just a matter of personal preference even though there's an argument to be made that this is a top 20 Best Picture. I actually find this one very unmemorable compared to the other war film winners even though it's quite a good movie.

25. Midnight Cowboy: Most people know it for the "I'hm walking here" line, which is one of the most famous quotes of all time. Midnight Cowboy is a solid film, about a country kid going to the big city and he tries to pay or receive payment with sex. Great, great acting, okay movie.

24. Birdman: How'd this one get so far?? Love this movie but I'm pretty surprised it made it here, I almost have to chalk it up to recency bias. But when I'm seeing movies like Sound of Music and Midnight Cowboy get cut, I can't let this one slide by anymore. Phenomenal acting by almost the entire cast, but a lot of this movie fell flat for me. The part that comes to mind is that one popular scene where Emma Stone is going on a rant to her dad about Facebook or some nonsense and I found that whole sequence really cringy and weirdly-written even though Emma Stone really shines in this movie. Probably my favorite part about this movie is the editing and the score. And the fact that it beat Boyhood, thank the fucking lord
